MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Feb. 12 (PIA) – Southern Leyte Governor Roger G. Mercado issued and signed Executive Order No 005, series of 2015 proclaiming February 27 of every year as Ruperto K. Kangleon Heritage Day in the whole province of Southern Leyte.

The proclamation stated that the “life of Ruperto K. Kangleon is worth emulating by all generations especially the youth and should always be inculcated in the minds and hearts of Southern Leyteṅos.”

Previously, the province of Southern Leyte has already declared Ruperto K. Kangleon Memorial Day by virtue of LGU Executive Proclamation dated January 11, 2011 to honor the late Kangleon as a war hero and exemplary public servant, being a /world War II Guerilla Commander, /Secretary of National Defense and a Philippine Senator, signed by then Gov. Damian G. Mercado.

As a fitting tribute of Honorable Kangleon, an original biographical drama with cultural songs and dances titled “For Love of Country, the Ruperto K. Kangleon Story” written by a young student will be performed by the Performing Arts Ensemble of the Tomas Oppus Normal College Campus of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) in the evening of February 27, 2015 at Maasin City gymnasium.

“Such cultural events would significantly bring the province of Southern Leyte to a higher level of historical-cultural revival and development,” the proclamation stated.

The RKK Heritage Day will honor an icon of national and international prominence and reflect the gratitude of all Southern Leyteṅos for his exemplary achievements as a soldier and public servant including guerilla leaders of the province.

It also urged all public and private schools in Southern Leyte to initiate and promote cultural programs and projects relevant to the historical-cultural heritage of outstanding Southern Leyteṅos. (ajc/rgc/PIA8-SoLeyte)
