CALBAYOG CITY, Samar, Nov. 16 (PNA) – Bikers from different places in this province took part in an activity advocating the preservation of environment.

Led by Samar Off Road Bikers Association (SORBA), the ‘Pedal Para sa Kalikasan’ was launched in this city on Sunday.

‘Pedal Para sa Kalikasan’ is a bicycle fun ride activity in coordination with the ‘Tour of the Fireflies’ which will be simultaneously conducted with other group of bikers in big cities in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao.

According to SORBA, the advocacy fun ride is not a race but a parade encouraging more people on bicycles and an activity promoting clean air and integration of the bicycle in long term and sustainable transportation programs and solutions.

Individual, organization, families, group of friends who are cycling enthusiasts from Sta. Margarita, Gandara, San Jorge, Tarangnan, Catbalogan City in Samar; and San Isidro and Allen in Northern Samar and other places in Samar Isaldn joined the event.

The 30-kilometer bicycle fun ride routing from Calbayog City to Sta. Margarita to Calbayog started at 6 a.m. and ended after three hours, with the speed range of 10 to 15 kilometers per hour.

Hence, the activity is also part of this year’s Tour of the Fireflies, the Firefly Brigade looked into the synchronized ride on Sunday as a continuing pedal stroke.

According to SORBA, the Firefly Brigade is interested on having a long-time partnership with Samar bikers on the environmental preservation advocacy.

For the past 16 years, the Firefly Brigade has been promoting the bicycle for clean air and sustainable communities. The volunteer organization has contributed and encouraged more people on bicycles in delivering the message to the government to address pollution and congestion, and integrate the bicycle in national development as well as local development programs of various cities and communities.

With its advocacy work, the organization has successfully contributed to the development of the bicycle industry and businesses in the country and has also added to the popularity of bicycling not only as a sport but also as transport and pleasurable daily activity.

It has participated and actively engaged various government agencies in implementing the Clean Air Act of 199 and entered into partnerships with key public and private organizations and local government units. (PNA)
