TACLOBAN CITY, (PNA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has set up Motorists’ Assistance Team in strategic locations along national road this Holy Week as part of the “Lakbay Alalay” Program, a service tradition activated during special occasions.

DPWH Regional Director Rolando M. Asis said that each district engineering offices will deploy two to three teams to man assistance desk from March 30 to April 6.

“Assigned personnel will observe on a round-the-clock shift to provide assistance on normal and emergency situation,” Asis said.

The team is expected to assist local and foreign tourists who will take opportunity of the Lenten break for their summer trip.

The assistance teams are directed to coordinate with concerned government entities such as Land Transportation Office, Philippine National Police, and Local Government Units head in order to provide the necessary assistance to motoring public.

The DPWH regional office directed contractors with on-going projects to properly install informative and warnings signs including posting of traffic advisory for alternate routes specifying entry and exit point with corresponding distances to by-pass traffic congested area.

“We told them to provide safety devices or barricades in their construction sites to ensure safety of the motoring public,” Asis added.

Maintenance unit were also asked to check informational and directional signs along national highways whether they are clearly marked and visible including the kilometer posts reference.

DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson also reiterated enforcement of the Department policy on the removal of permanent or otherwise movable obstructions, along national roads and bridges such as unauthorized vendors and traders, illegal parking, and terminals to improve the flow of traffic.(PNA)
