MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, (PIA) — For the year 2015, the national government through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has earmarked Php213.15 Million for the construction of 202 classrooms for public secondary schools throughout Southern Leyte, DPWH-Southern Leyte District Engineer Ma. Margarita c. Junia informed.

In a press release, Junia stated that the DPWH sets a weekly coordination meeting with the Department of Education (DepEd) to ensure timely construction of the said school buildings in the province.

“The regular meeting scheduled with DepEd officials aims to step up monitoring of school building projects, in preparation for the full implementation of Senior High School program next school year,” Junia quoted.

The regular meeting is in compliance to DepEd Memorandum Circular No. 125 directing all education officials to meet weekly with DPWH engineers in order to address issues and concerns which may arise in the project implementation, it was learned.

DE Junia said that as of last week, 26 projects, representing the first batch have been bid out and nine projects under third batch were also bid out.

The SLDEO is also done with the bidding of five buildings for vocational and technical schools while on the pipeline is the bidding for the sixth batch. Pre-detailed engineering is also on-going for the 7th and 8th batches, the source further said.

The 2015 budget is more than double than last year’s Php100.55 Million allocation for the construction of learning rooms throughout the province, Junia further noted. (with reports from DPWH/rgc/aen/PIA8-SoLeyte)
