BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar, Sept. 13 (PIA) – A skimrider from Barangay Sabang, Borongan City won in one of the most prestigious skimboarding events in the world.

Roderick Celada Bazar, 28, of this City won in the Master’s Division Category in the 2014 ZAP Amateur World Championships of Skimboarding in Delaware, United States of America (USA).

The world’s top amateur skimboarders hit the shore break giving all their best tacks and wave riding skill in Dewey Beach in Delaware, USA last August 9-10, 2014.

Just last March 2013, the Philippines was invited to a prestigious gathering of skimboarders from all over the world in Kenting, Taiwan. Skimboarders from Singapore, USA, France, Japan and Malaysia participated in the said event.

The Philippines was represented by Roderick and Jerry. Both of them brought home the Championship and 1st place, respectively.

In an interview with PIA, Bazar expalined the difference between skimboarding and surfing. “Skimboarding isderived from surfing and unlike surfing, it begins at the beach by dropping the board unto the thin wash or the fading waves,” Bazar said.

For this year’s competition at United Skim Tour in Newport Beach, USA, the Philippines is invited and will be represented again by Mr. Bazar.

Mr. Bazar thus appeals to the Eastern Samarenos to help him raise P42,000.00 for his plane ticket. He has obtained a US Visa already but still lacks money for plane tickets.

Skimboarding and surfing are growing sports in Eastern Samar but athletes still lack support from local governments. (aen/sdc/PIA8-E Samar)
