CATBALOGAN CITY,Samar, (PIA) – Calbayog Mayor Ronaldo Aquino, in a press conference expressed concern over the dependency of some families with the cash granted by the government to Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) beneficiaries.
He said that he received reports that cash cards are pawned till the next grant of the government’s ‘aid’ to poor Pinoys.
“I would rather that the government give them a hefty sum to be used in livelihood, which is self liquidating, ” the mayor told reporters.
They must be taught to ‘fish for a lifetime’ and not just to be given fish for a day, the mayor quoted a saying on dependency.
He also commented that CCT beneficiaries have grown lazy, that they should really be taught to manage the meager finances they are given.
On the other hand, Rep Mel Sarmiento urged the barangay captains to report to concerned authorities those that will violate the conditions attached to the grant of fund by the government.
“Call the program Conditional Cash Transfer,” he said emphasizing that the fund is granted pending on conditions like reproductive age mothers seeking periodical care from the rural health center, children given proper nutrition and sent to school.
“Kun may dire magsunod, i-report (If they do not obey,report them), ” he challenged the barangay officials.
The Samar solon explained that the program aims to push families to educate their children to be able to finish school and save the families from the vicious cycle of poverty.
“But they should not abuse, they should abide by the conditions,” he said.
Of the 157 barangays of Calbayog, 156 barangays are now enjoying the benefits of the conitional cash transfer program by the Aquino administration. (vrc/nimfa b quirante/PIA 8-Samar)
