TACLOBAN CITY, March 20 (PNA) — After being away from last year’s National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) in Manila, education officials and student writers from typhoon-weary Eastern Visayas vowed for a strong comeback in the forthcoming highest journalism competition of the Department of Education (DepED) in Taguig City on April 6 to 10.
“We need all the inspiration and energy we can get. We are aiming for a better result this year,” said Alejandrito Yman, chief of the curriculum and learning management division in the region.
Yman asked the eager group of campus journalists both from elementary and high school to “focus” during the “live-out mentoring and coaching the 2015 NSPC qualifiers” at the DepEd regional office in Palo, Leyte.
At least 268 participants composed of campus writers from first to third in individual journalistic contest for both English and Filipino categories, coaches, publication advisers and officials in the region will join the event.
Getrudes Mabutin, journalism regional coordinator, thanked the participants for their sacrifices and dedication during the various lectures and workshops on editorial writing, news, feature, sports, science and technology, copy reading and headline writing, TV/Radio broadcasting, and desktop publishing, among others.
“The training has equipped us with the necessary ammunition for the upcoming competition. We are ready,” said Glenn Permejo, editorial writing contestant from Tolosa National High School in Tolosa, Leyte.
Aside from the training, participants also conducted an election for Regional Associations of School Paper Advisers (RASPA) for both elementary and high school.
Cesar Montaño, award-winning campus paper adviser from Javier National High School in Javier, Leyte and Mark Salas, from Guiuan, Eastern Samar, were elected presidents for secondary and elementary, respectively. (PNA)
