NAVAL, Biliran,  (PIA) – The month of June this year will be a busy month for the officers and members of the infant Rotary Club (RC) of Biliran Island as it initiates education and humanitarian assistance projects.

The Rotary Club of Biliran Island with club number 86341 was officially registered as a charter by the Rotary International on February 11, 2015 with Engr. Ferdinand D. Morillo, proprietor of D’Mei Restobar and Inn and D’Mei Residences, as its president and its few members coming from the different professional groups in Biliran province.

In a statement issued by Engr. Morillo, RC of Biliran Island recognizes the problem of primary grades and their parents during school opening which drives the organization to undertake the 1st Balik Eskwela program.

“This program hopes to distribute school uniforms, slippers, school bags and school supplies targeting primary grade pupils from Grades 1 – 3 in displaced areas in Biliran province.” Morillo said.

He added, this activity encourages and motivates pupils to attend school and contributes to minimizing school drop-outs based on various data gathered.

RC Biliran Island identified Sitio Patag and Brgy Bacolod in the Municipality of Culaba as the recipient and we are targeting the distribution during the 1st week of school opening in June, he added.

He admitted the funds for this program have been sourced out from members’ pledges and big-hearted individual donors.

Morillo also informed that the Charter has organized a campaign to collect any amount of donation to help the people of Nepal, especially those without homes and food after the country was struck by an earthquake.

“As one of the recipients of various international relief organizations including Rotary International during Yolanda, the Rotary Club of Biliran Island and other Rotary Clubs in the region have conducted fund drives to send the RC districts’ contribution in response this worldwide call.

Morillo also informed that the Charter has organized a campaign distributing donation cans and boxes to establishments soon, to encourage the people of Biliran to give their donations, in any amount, to show support in any way they can, to this effort.

The donation boxes will be collected in the 1st week of July since the deadline for the endorsement of the proceeds of the donation will be on July 15. (ajc/rvictoria/PIA 8 Biliran)
